I'm not sure what you are doing
1 - do not go into the iPhoto library and never, never, never modify anything in the iPhoto library
2 - to import photos select the photos on your hard drive (or on the external drive) and drag then to the iPhoto icon in the DOCK - iPhoto will import them into the iPhoto library (do not change the preference to copy imported items to the iPhoto library - it should be checked)
3 - post back if this is not clear - Your post was not clear to me
